How Hypnotherapy Can Help You Maintain Weight Loss After Taking a Weight Loss Drug

March 16, 2026

Losing weight is a significant achievement, especially if you’ve used a weight loss drug to help you reach your goals. However, many people find that maintaining their new weight can be just as challenging—if not more so—than losing it in the first place. This is where hypnotherapy can play a valuable role in supporting long-term success.

Understanding the Challenge of Weight Maintenance

After completing a course of weight loss medication, it’s common to worry about regaining the weight. The body’s natural tendency is to return to its previous set point, and old habits can easily creep back in. While weight loss drugs can help you shed the kilos, they don’t always address the underlying behaviours and thought patterns that contributed to weight gain in the first place.

What Is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that utilises guided relaxation and focused attention to facilitate positive changes at a subconscious level. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not about losing control or being put to sleep. Instead, it’s a gentle and effective way to reprogramme your mind, making it easier to adopt healthier habits and attitudes.

How Hypnotherapy Supports Weight Maintenance

  1. Changing Your Relationship with Food

Hypnotherapy can help you develop a healthier attitude towards food. By addressing emotional eating, cravings, and triggers, you’re less likely to fall back into old patterns once the medication is stopped.
  2. Building Lasting Habits

Through positive suggestions and visualisation, hypnotherapy can reinforce healthy behaviours such as mindful eating, portion control, and regular exercise. These habits are crucial for maintaining your weight loss in the long term.
  3. Boosting Motivation and Confidence

Many people struggle with self-doubt after losing weight. Hypnotherapy can help you build self-confidence and stay motivated, making it easier to stick to your new lifestyle.
  4. Managing Stress and Emotional Triggers
Stress and emotions often play a big role in weight gain. Hypnotherapy teaches relaxation techniques and coping strategies, helping you manage stress without turning to food for comfort.

What to Expect from a Hypnotherapy Session

A typical session involves relaxing in a comfortable setting while the hypnotherapist guides you through visualisations and positive affirmations tailored to your goals. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the process. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing and empowering.

Is Hypnotherapy Right for You?

Hypnotherapy is a safe and non-invasive option that can complement your weight maintenance plan. It’s important to choose a qualified hypnotherapist who understands your unique needs and goals. While results can vary, many people find that hypnotherapy provides the extra support they need to maintain their weight loss and enjoy a healthier, happier life.

First Session – Free Online Consultation Me: I want to learn more about her as a person. What does she enjoy? What worries her? Does she have any medical or mental conditions? What about her relationships, friends, and family? My main goal is to help her feel comfortable and build trust. I explain confidentiality and support. During the session, she shared details about her childhood. She believes it has affected her throughout her life. This early sharing shows we will work well together. Client Questions and Clarifications She asked questions about hypnosis. I clear up any misunderstandings. I explain how I work, both in and out of trance. I focus on helping her reach her goals. From early on, I sense that smoking is a habit. It’s used to suppress worry and anxiety from her experiences. Adjusting Her Goals By the end of 45 minutes, she changed her goal. She wants to stay calm and in control of her emotions. Quitting smoking became less important. Second Session – Exploration and Trance Work Aim of the Session: To explore her worries. To answer questions. To discover how she experiences trance. In Trance: I help her feel calm and relaxed. She allows herself to drift into hypnosis. I then introduce positive suggestions. I teach her a simple strategy to stay calm and in control. Progress and Insights In later sessions, we explore her life deeply. We work both in and out of trance. She unlearns negative beliefs about herself. She gains insight into her smoking and substance use. She develops confidence and makes better choices. She cares more for herself. She is less affected by upsetting situations and people. She feels calmer, clearer, and more balanced. Inner Child Work We worked with her inner child. She was hurt, lonely, and frightened. She starts to reintegrate and nurture this inner child. Focus on Smoking Cessation We did not focus on quitting smoking until the seventh session. Her anxiety started to ease. Success and Reflection She has now stopped smoking. I am very proud of her. She invested in herself. She made deep, lasting changes in her unconscious mind.
